Serial is a podcast exploring a nonfiction story over multiple episodes, broadcast by WBEZ91.5, a radio station based in Chicago, Illinois. www.serialpodcast.org Season 1 (2014) is an investigation into a 1999 Baltimore murder, hosted by Sarah Koenig, who explores, ‘the basics: love and death and justice and truth. All these big, big things.’
Why am I listening to it? Well, firstly, I have a dog to walk and I’m all for multi tasking. Secondly, I’ve noticed a bit of a buzz about Serial and there comes a point when I want to be in the loop. And thirdly? That depends. I’ve started, so I’ll probably see it through to all twelve episodes. It is, after all, New Year, and I’m resolved to increase my walking habit, but I’m hoping to be caught up and fascinated by the format. Koenig doesn’t claim that it is an original idea. ‘Maybe in podcast form it is, and trying to do it as a documentary story is really, really hard. But trying to do it as a serial, this is as old as Dickens.’ I need to hurry up though, because with so much attention being paid to Serial, I may discover a spoiler before I’ve finished.
